Also known as Holy Month, this joyous observance impacts every aspect of life in Sharjah and is a highly public experience. Those who are not observing Ramadan should note and follow a few critical points of etiquette during this special time: Don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during fasting hours This applies to all public spaces, and all transportation, both public and private. Observance of the fast in Sharjah is compulsory regardless of religion. Restaurants may alter service times and offerings. Enjoy the Ramadan night markets One of the best things about Holy Month are the night markets and pop-up souks that bring the community together. With food, souvenirs and lots of shopping, these markets are great fun to share with family and friends. Be charitable and friendly Ramadan is a time of gratitude and charity, and everyone is invited to share the joy of these practices, regardless of faith. Invite those less fortunate to break their fast in your home, or purchase food and water to stock others’ fridges. Plan ahead when scheduling food and entertainment Be flexible with dining and leisure plans during Holy Month. Avoid unnecessary travel within an hour of sunset when traffic is heavy. For greatest flexibility, make reservations before or after peak iftar times. Observe restraint interpersonally in public During Ramadan, avoid displays of affection in public places. Clothing and behavior that show respect to religious tradition are particularly appreciated during Ramadan.
